A DIY retro digital camera project - Blog #14 What you see, what you capture

Finally, a screen-free camera with an accurate viewfinder. Rewindpix uses a 3:2 sensor crop and 35mm lens for reliable framing and best-in-class quality.

A DIY retro digital camera project - Blog #14 What you see, what you capture

Of all the downsides of screen-free digital cameras, the inaccurate viewfinder framing is the biggest dealbreaker for me.

I can forgive the exposure issues caused by small sensors and cheap glass. After all, you get what you pay for. However, the fact that no screen-free camera offers accurate framing kills my interest in using them for anything serious shooting. The unreliable field of view destroys my confidence in composing a shot. Since these are just casual, low-cost cameras, I shouldn't have to waste time fixing composition in post-processing.

The issue comes with the aspect ratio misalignment between the tunnel vision small plastic viewfinder and the sensor aspect ratio most screen free camera used.

The tunnel vision viewfinder: they are exactly the same as the disposable film cameras, I am sure the viewfinder suppliers mainly supply these basic viewfinders to Kodak/Fuji or whoever in the marketing still making disposable cameras. Guess the aspect ratio? Same as 135 film = 3:2. And most of the disposable film camera lens = 28-32mm

The sensor: For most of the screen free digital cameras, they used either 1/4" or 1/3" inch sensors (most likely Sony IMX or OmniVision). And these sensors were used in old cellphone, webcam or dashcam, the aspect ratio are the same as these device = 4:3. And most of the cameras claim to have a 35mm equivalent lens, but from what I experienced, they are wider, maybe 24-28mm

Below example shows the difference

So for the extra space the viewfinder can't see, we would need to chop off show head/legs/tree branches from time to time.

Rewindpix solution:

Inspired by the Agfa Optima 535 Sensor, Rewindpix adopts its iconic large viewfinder and classic 3:2 aspect ratio. We have calibrated our IMX258 sensor (4:3, 13MP) readout to match this format, merging traditional film aesthetics with modern digital hardware.

To ensure accurate framing, we cropped the IMX258 sensor output from its native 4:3 ratio to 3:2 and carefully selected a lens that provides a 35mm full-frame equivalent focal length.

The Result: What you see through the viewfinder actually matches what you capture.

The Trade-off: Due to this cropping, the effective resolution drops from 13MP to 10.6MP.

We sincerely believe this is a sacrifice worth making to create a truly accurate point & shoot experience. Furthermore, thanks to our high-quality lens selection and top-tier ISP tuning, Rewindpix delivers the best picture quality in its class (we tested/compared peers' newer models)

Say no more, example photos below. Cellphone see thought the viewfinder followed by actual photos from Rewindpix, SOOC, no filter applied.
