10 Months Into the Project, A Different Kind of Tired
Tired? Yes, I won’t deny it. But this is a very different kind of tired compared to office work tired. This time, I’m pushing myself to the limit voluntarily, for only the second time in my life. (The first time might have been trying to win the Premier League in Football Manager during one summer a long time ago.)
For those of you who have followed me through this development journey, whether many or just a few, you already know one thing about me: I hate post-editing. As an old-timer in the photography world, I genuinely believe heavy post-editing can ruin the purpose of taking a photo.
In today’s era, I could easily open Nano Banana and copy/tweak some prompts to generate a cool AI image. But then what’s the point of taking a train to the city and walking 30K steps for a few shots? The whole point of photography for me is the decisive moment: when the moment, mood, colors, and vibes freeze at the exact time I press the shutter, not afterwards.
Due to the limitation of the in camera processor, in camera filters can't meet my film simulation standards (Though I do keep the in camera mode available in case we go for a long hike in Sahara desert without the phone). So the almighty phone processor in our pocket is the only option, why waste the over powerful phone processor? It can serve as the most convenient "darkroom" on the go. Therefore, Rewindpix filter app got created. With 20+ lightroom quality level presets and unlimited customizable options, it will certainly rock the screen-free camera world (a still new world, consider human sapiens at stone age).
That’s why one of my most important goals for this project is to provide the best film simulation SOOC (straight out of camera) with Rewindpix.
Why We Built the Rewindpix Filter App
Because of the limitations of the in-camera processor, regular in-camera filters just can’t meet my standards for film simulation. (Although we do keep the in-camera mode available, just in case you go for a long hike in the Sahara desert without your phone.)
The truth is, the most powerful processor in our everyday life is sitting right in our pocket already: your phone. So why waste it? It can serve as the most convenient digital darkroom on the go. That’s why the Rewindpix filter app was created.
What the Rewindpix App Offers
-
20+ Lightroom-quality presets
-
Unlimited customizable film looks
-
SOOC film simulation without post-editing paralysis
-
Three-filter system (C1/C2/C3) for pre-loaded “film rolls”
With these tools, Rewindpix is ready to rock the screen-free camera world (a world still in its stone-age stage, if we compare it to human evolution).
Going Beyond LUTs: More Film Simulation Features Coming Soon
As an ideal film simulation app (in my day-dream world), development can’t stop at just LUTs and color curves. If we want a true film look straight from our phones, we need to push this “pocket darkroom” to its limit.
So what’s next?
Upcoming film-style features we’re working on:
-
Light leak effects
-
Film grain
-
Vintage photo texture
-
Analog timestamp
A little bird once told me: one photo > a thousand words. So, here you go!
After you finished the basic adjustment of a filter (Brightness, highlight/shadow, contrast etc), add on effects page will be available in the app for you to add light leak, vintage photo texture (like you took the photo in 19th century), timestamp and grain effect level (0-100% slider).
1. Light leak effect example

Light leak effect sample 1

Light leak effect sample 2

Light leak effect sample 3
I can continue, but I think you get my point. We can add more or even set a random level if possible.
2. Vintage photo effect

See the scratches and the white spots on the photo? This showcase one of the many vintage photo effects. Make your audiences wonder whether you got a time machine.
3. Grain

Without adding grain

with the grain added, might be too much, but with the 0-100% slider, the control is all yours.
4. Time stamp

See the orange time stamp under the kid's large backpack? This is something we are working on. Same as all other add on effects, you will have the options to choice your time stamp style. But please rest assure, all will be mimic the last century analog style ones, not the white/yellow ugly digital numbers that we all hate to see.
Something like this if someone haven't seen them before.

Ok. Stay tuned. We are at the end of the push. Tired as hell but when I imagine I can finally create something cool in the world, I am in heaven already.
And finally, thanks much to our app development team! Awesome job, what a achievement after too many late night scratching!

Thanks much for the support, Victor!
Yes, we put a lot of thoughts into the app and the film simulation logic between the camera/app.
All your suggestions are great and we believe we can achieve these cool features down the road. But for now, we would like to hit the MVPs and make the app as organic as possible. You are correct, with the app (and hope it is smooth without many bugs) we can do many cool/fun things together with the camera
Great read! Looking forward to seeing how this camera handles for myself. I think you have something special going with the app as a secondary editing software and I’m excited to see what it can do. I really like when apps allow you to take pictures from your photo library and edit them with your own retro flare using grain and lightleaks and blur. Might I suggest the ability to add border frames and the ability to adjust the aspect ratio to the photo? i.e polaroid square, and Instax square and wide. That would be a great feature especially all the colorways Instax has created. I also love the idea and how fun the Yashica Mat 6×6 square ratio camera looks. Maybe the ability to change or crop apsect ratios? Apps can offer so much cool factor and viriety to the already awesome camera you have going on. I know this camera will be great out of the gate! Good job and keep it going ! I can’t wait to snap some pictures.
